Each pixel is a microscopic cup holding coloured particles: black, white, red, yellow, blue and green. Apply a precise little pulse of electricity, and the right pigments rise to the surface to form the colour that spot needs to be.
Because it's built from six real pigments rather than glowing sub-pixels, the result looks like something that was printed, not displayed. Colours sit calm and matte. Up close you can almost read it as paper.
Why the picture changes slowly — on purpose
An e-ink frame doesn't refresh sixty times a second like a video screen. When you send it a new image it takes a moment — the pigments physically rearrange themselves — and then it simply holds, perfectly still.
This throws some people at first, but it's the whole point. This is art, not a feed. It's meant to settle into a wall and stay there until you decide otherwise. The slowness is a feature: nothing flickers, nothing demands your attention, nothing scrolls.
