What is colour e-ink? The tech behind Spectra 6

Most screens work by shining light at you. Your phone, your TV, the tablet on your desk — they are all lamps, mixing red, green and blue light behind glass. E-ink works the other way round: like paper, it simply reflects the light already in the room. That single difference explains almost everything people love about it.

Millions of microcapsules, no light at all

An e-ink panel is a thin film filled with millions of microscopic capsules, each holding pigment particles that carry an electrical charge. Apply a small voltage and the pigments physically move — some rise to the surface, others sink out of view. Whatever arrangement they land in simply stays there, held in place, with no power required to maintain it.

That is why an e-ink image behaves like ink on paper rather than light on glass. It has no glow, no flicker and no glare, and it stays visible from any angle — CanvasBT's panel is readable across a full 180°, in anything from morning sun to lamplight.

What Spectra 6 changed

For years e-ink meant greyscale — wonderful for novels, useless for art. E Ink Spectra 6 is a newer generation of the technology built around six pigment colours inside the film itself. Instead of filtering a white backlight the way an LCD does, the panel arranges actual coloured pigments — so colours come out rich but natural, closer to a gallery print or a woodblock poster than a saturated screen.

Why the battery lasts up to a year

Because the pigments hold their position physically, an e-ink frame only draws power at one moment: when the picture changes. Displaying art costs nothing.
